The New Cake – Cupcakes!

Traditional cakes are delicious and beautiful, but you might want to consider an alternative for your next birthday party or wedding. Cupcakes are a quick and easy alternative to the traditional cake. They can be transformed into simple cupcakes with frosting and sprinkles to more elaborate versions such as faces or animals. The following is a list of ideas that can transform your next event into a cupcake event.

Flavours- Cupcakes can come in variety of flavours including plain vanilla or chocolate to flavours like lemon, banana or spicy carrot. By having a variety of flavours at your event you will ensure that your guests will find something that they like.

Shape-  traditional we think of cupcakes as round, but you can also get baking pans in a variety of different shapes including hearts, stars or flowers.

Frosting Flavours- Like the cupcake itself, it is easy to transform the frosting on top with a variety of different flavours including chocolate, lemon, cream cheese or strawberry. This variety adds another layer of interest to the cake. It can be made as simple or as elaborate as you like.

Frosting Colour- there are limitless number of colours that can transform your frosting. Pick a colour that goes with the theme of your party. From subtle pastels to bold bright primary colours, the colour of your frosting should reflex the theme of your event and the flavour of the cake it covers.

Frosting Style- As you can imagine there are a number of ways to apply frosting to any cupcake. from smooth butter cream to poured fondant the way you choose to apply the frosting to your cupcake can transform the entire look. Dipping a cupcake in butter cream frosting is a quick and easy way of decorating the top, a more elaborate method is to encase the entire cake in fondant, it is also a nice effect when you apply frosting to the top of the cake through a piping bag with a star tip. Whichever method you choose, the application of frosting is sure to make your cupcakes unique and mouth watering.

Filling- By adding filing to the top of your cupcakes, you can add another dimension of surprise to your guests. Pick a filling flavour that compliments your cupcake and frosting choices. There are a variety of flavours to choose from including chocolate, vanilla, and lemon.

Decorating- Now we get to the part of cupcake making that can be the most fun. It may help your inspiration to pick up a couple of cake decorating magazines or books to help guide you through the process and inspire your creativity. These books will show you how to transform the top of the cupcake into clown faces, flowers, or animals. They will suggest a variety of ideas including different candies and toppings that might suit the theme of your party. There is no limit when decorating the top of a cupcake. Pick the toppings you and your guests will like and figure out a way to make a beautiful or interesting design on the top of the cakes.

As you have seen the cupcake is a great way to add a personal touch to your party. Don’t be afraid to try something different on your cupcakes, because if something doesn’t work, or doesn’t look great, you can always eat the mistake and no one will ever know. Good Luck!
